Keep Growing

Children have two PE lessons per week. In KS1 lessons are taught by the class teacher. In KS2 lessons are taught by either a class teacher or specialist coach. Each lesson is inclusive and is adapted to be inclusive and meet the individual needs of the pupils. Class teachers follow the Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work.

Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work for Primary PE

The Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work for Primary School Physical Education has been produced to support the planning and delivery of National Curriculum Physical Education as a response to the 2014 review.

Physical Education is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all pupils. This involves both ‘learning to move’ (i.e. becoming more physically competent) and ‘moving to learn’ (e.g. learning through movement, a range of skills and understandings beyond physical activity, such as co-operating with others). The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities, including reocognisable sporting applications, swimming, OAA and dance.

The notion of ‘learning to move; moving to learn’ underpins a high-quality Physical Education curriculum and is where this resource aims to support staff to deliver consistently high quality Physical Education lessons.

This Scheme of Work has been a collaboration across Cambridgeshire, using the best local expertise from teachers, many staff from across five high performing School Sport Partnerships led by the Cambridgeshire County Council specialist adviser for PE and School Sport and a number of Associate Advisers.

Swimming Pool

All primary schools must provide swimming and water safety lessons in either Key Stage 1 or 2.

Each pupil is required to be able to do the following:

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations
  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.

Here at Swaffham Prior, we have our very own swimming pool, which enables us to regularly swim (weather permitting!) in Autumn and Summer terms. In addition to this, upper KS2 children are provided 'deep water' swimming lessons at a local 25m pool.

Keeping Active

At Swaffham Prior, we believe keeping active not only helps children to learn healthy habits, but helps to develop a child's confidence and resilience. To encourage this, KS2 children take part in the 'daily mile'.
